Thank you to those who were able to join us for Homecoming 2013 and Family & Friends Weekend in October. These activities, along with the Apple Festival next door on Saturday afternoon, ensured that the Hill was the place to be for the weekend! The festivities began on Friday evening when I hosted the class of 1963 along with other alumni. Of course with 50 years since graduation, this class had more than their share of memories to reminisce about. One very exciting element for this group was classmate Tom Niles’ charge to match up to $50,000 in funds raised toward a 1963 endowed scholarship. I am proud to announce that they reached their $100,000 goal during Homecoming on Saturday afternoon! This represents the largest gift from a class toward a scholarship. We hope this significant accomplishment encourages other class years to invest in Nichols students through endowed scholarships.
While Saturday began with rain, the weather cleared off soon enough for the packed football game and tailgating. Even the bookstore was packed with students, parents, and alumni rushing to purchase Nichols memorabilia. Overall, it was a perfect day for alumni returning to the Hill to share memories while making some new ones.
Congratulations to the following alumni award recipients: Thomas “Troop” Emonds ’67, Christopher McWade ’81 (posthumously), Ronald Schmitt ’62, ’65, and Professor Emerita, Louise Nordstrom. Congratulations also go to Thomas Loricco ’78, Heather Clarke ’06, and Bryan Meuse ’07 who were inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame. In addition, the 1973 football team was the second Nichols sports team to be inducted into the Hall of Honor.
I hope you will save the date for Homecoming 2014 on Friday, September 19 and Saturday, September 20. Mark your calendars now as this Homecoming will be extra special as we kick off Nichols 200th Celebration!
