The opening of a new academic year makes me smile. It’s always fun to see the new faces of students who are walking in the footsteps of those who crossed the graduation stage in May. For me, the equation is one that never fails: new academic year = new perspectives + fresh faces + another batch of future alumni.
Before my welcome address, Vice President for Student Affairs PJ Boggio, Student Government President Spenser Molloy, and I shook the hand of every new student filing in. This year I was truly struck by the eye contact, strong handshakes, and apparent confidence of our new students. They’re off to a good start.
As all students were unpacking their boxes, we were also unpacking new curricular elements, including three new in-demand concentrations: (1) Corporate Finance & Investments; (2) Digital and Social Media Marketing; and (3) Marketing Analytics. In addition, Nichols WAY is launching, which empowers students to explore their interests and passions. This program is facilitated through explorations and assignments in five first-year courses. Exciting times for students!
The dining hall is looking great as we progress through the latest phase of its multi-year renovation. It was a bit unnerving to see NO roof at the beginning of summer before the steel beams were put in place for the new vaulted roof with side lights. The natural light falling on diners says bon appetit.
It’s also been a pleasantly warm and sunny September. The expanses of green lawn running to the red brick buildings and Nichols students sauntering around campus in short sleeve shirts make for a good postcard to those not here to share the view.
